AGV and AMR

Electromagnetic clutch and brake solutions for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs)

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are autonomously, or automatically controlled industrial vehicles used for transportation. An autonomously controlled AGV system learns and adapts to a changing environment, whereas an automatically controlled AGV system functions within defined parameters such as following wires or markers.

The term AGV often encompasses all transport systems which can function without human operation, or are ‘driverless’. Thought to be the future of manufacturing and warehouse automation, AGVs offer a cost effective and efficient solution to material handling and transport. Considered to be safer than manual alternatives, AGVs utilise safety sensors and devices to detect obstacles and stop until the obstruction has moved, preventing collisions and damage to goods or infrastructure.

Accurate and reliable braking is essential, not only to allow precise movement when maneuvering and completing processes, but to stop and hold position when not in motion. Typically, spring applied brakes or permanent magnet brakes offer the best solution for AGVs and AMRs. SG Transmission offers a wide range of electromagnetic brakes which can be customised to suit the specific requirements of any application.
